Literature Text

She's trying to smile but you call her a liar,
and it all melts away in the dawn's cold fire;
beg to be thrown in the pit and the briar,
and blood slowly dripping like tears down a wire,
but stay, my dear,
drink and dreams in your head,
think you're asleep but you're probably dead.

Fall to a trance with your wings at your back,
darkness will take from you all that it lacks,
dark-handed gibbet will snap up the slack,
failed, the defensive, and lost the attack,
but oh! lost doll,
drinking goes to your head,
think you're asleep but you're probably dead.

Hang your head over and hear the wind blow,
quietly warning what nobody knows,
sending your spirit where nobody goes,
search for the city that daylight won't show,
and fly, my dear,
stand the world on its head,
think you're asleep but you're probably dead.

Light up the candles and wait for the night,
touch the cool water and give up your fight,
open your arms to what never was right,
and try not to scream as you blow out the light,
so come, my child,
what dreams in your head!
think you're asleep but you're probably dead.
I'm intensely fond of this one. I didn't realize until it was written that it's actually symbolic of a lot of things for me; I didn't sit down to write with anything actually in mind.

I left it as it came out of my pencil for the first time, with the exception of the first line, which is an amendment, because people kept misunderstanding the original.

I always loved the last repeated line in this one... I'm not sure I saw the full version until now, however, just snippets and scribbled pieces. Though my memory may be foggy or preoccupied.
